چکیده
This paper introduces two new paradoxes for standard deontic logic (SDL). They are importantly related to, but distinct from Ross' paradox. These SDL the simple weakening paradox and complex Both of these arise in virtue underlying consequences fact that incorporates principle known as weakening. then show has counter-intuitive implications to disjunctive obligations decisions concerning how discharge such obligations. Prescriptive and Descriptive Obligations in Dynamic Epistemic Deontic Logic
Normative sentences can be used to change or to describe the normative system, known as prescriptive and descriptive obligations respectively. In applications of deontic logic it is important to distinguish these two uses of normative sentences. In this paper we show how they can be distinguished and analysed in a dynamic epistemic deontic logic.
متن کاملViolated Obligations in a Defeasible Deontic Logic 1 Leendert
Deontic logic is characterized by the distinction between the actual and the ideal. In this article we discuss the situation where the actual deviates from the ideal, where obligations are violated. Nonmonotonic logics can be very helpful for the formalization of deontic reasoning, in particular to infer moral cues. It has been argued that the problems related to violated obligations, e.g. the ...
متن کاملObligations with deadlines: a formalization in Dynamic Deontic Logic
Segerberg’s Dynamic Deontic Logic is a dynamic logic where among the set of all possible histories those fulfilling the norms are distinguished. An extension of this logic to obligations (respectively permissions and prohibitions) to do an action before a given deadline or during a given time interval is defined. These temporal constraints are defined by events which may have several occurrence...
متن کاملMaintaining Obligations on Stative Expressions in a Deontic Action Logic
We consider the logical representation of obligations on stative expressions such as The yard must be clean in the context of legal contract formation, execution, and monitoring (cf. Wyner (2003)). In a contract, the expression may understood as an obligation to maintain a property. We use a Deontic Action Logic to represent obligations over the course of time (Khosla and Maibaum (1987) and Mey...
